Work Begins On New Datacentre

With our original datacentre already close to full capacity in Manchester we are in the process of opening our second UK datacentre right next door to our Manchester head office. This new building presents us with a white sheet of paper on which to design a state of the art datacentre which is likely to be the most energy efficient in Europe.

The new datacentre design is targeting a PuE of just 1.15, quite an aim considering that we already has an enviably green track record on energy efficiency with our main datacentre measuring just 1.18 PuE as supported by granular records taken every five minutes and stretching back over 18 months.

Our new building, which was purchased last month, will mean that new customers will soon be able to enjoy the spacious surrounds which boasts a location with free and secure parking just a very short distance from the motorway system and a stone’s throw away from Media City and the Trafford Centre, one of the biggest shopping malls in Europe.

M247 Operations Director Jonathan Buckle is part of a team managing the build of the new datacentre and he says “ the experience we gained a few years back when we opened our first datacentre will be invaluable to the success of this new building. We’re determined to have our new datafloors operational in the very near future and a number of our development team will be moving across within days to enjoy their spacious new office accommodation. Our team has grown significantly recently and this new space will help us all benefit in so many ways.”

Asked what other changes this new building will bring, Chris Byrd, our Technical Director, said “ Targeting high bandwidth users requiring connectivity under our GlobalAXS brand and the colocation market under our IceColo brand, the new datacentre will house at least 300 racks to which we will be able to deliver 32 amp A + B with an N+1 UPS set up. Importantly, the new datacentre will have a carrier neutral proposition with 60Gbps of activated connectivity capacity including an advanced 10Gbps IP and MPLS network connected directly to 7 of the world\'s largest and most important Internet exchanges via a resilient European network ring spanning Manchester, London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris and Belgium with a full London bypass. We also have direct peering relationships with 70% of all the European ISPs. Our recent investment and massive capacity positions us with practically unlimited growth potential for many years into the future.”

More news to follow as the new datacentre building progresses.

M247, parent company of Ice Colo, acquires additional new building

Described by the directors as a deal that was “too good to miss” M247, parent company of Ice Colo, is pleased to announce that it has exchanged contracts on the purchase of a new building that will give us lots of room to expand. Since 2009, our existing building has housed full-time 24 x 7 technical support, administration and management staff with a state of the art datacentre being housed on a separate floor. This new building offers lots of potential for growth and development into new areas.

Within just a very short time M247 has almost reached capacity on our datafloor here in Manchester and in other datacentres around Europe where we own infrastructure. Since the Internet and Data Markets are still growing at an incredible rate while the property market has at best plateaued, it’s obvious that rather than rent more space we just had to buy this new building. The additional building will allow M247 and our various Internet Divisions to grow by at least a factor of 5 and give us a huge boost in sales potential.

Managed Internet Services and Co-Location within the datacentre are very much in demand and there are deals already in the pipeline to begin to fill up the new datafloor once it comes on-stream in the very near future.

“The challenge now is to improve on what we’ve learned from our early days experience with infrastructure in a London datacentre and then subsequently moving to Manchester and building our own flagship datacentre. This development made us more efficient and competitive in the process” says M247 Operations Director Jonathan Buckle. “Our existing Manchester datacentre is already one of the most efficient in the whole of Europe with a PUE efficiency rating of 1.18 and we are probably already the largest privately owned network provider in the UK with thousands of customers in every time zone”.

This extra space and capacity also means that M247 can offer additional managed services such as disaster recovery and bespoke accommodation for our larger managed services clients and the luxury of more space will allow us to move servers around to take advantage of the highly competitive connectivity and power supply at our Manchester base.

It’s hardly surprising that the news of rapid growth is also creating interest with the rich seam of local employees with good computer and network skills. By the time the new datacentre is fully operational, M247 anticipates having to double our technical workforce to approximately 60.

Surge Of Interest In Rack Space

Located at one of Europe’s greenest datacentres, IceColo is expanding again and is experiencing a surge in interest for rack space, so much so in fact that we are planning to almost triple our capacity in the very near future. Diverse customers from all over the world have bought into our flexible and highly competitive approach to pricing and specifying and are benefitting from some unique deals.

•	Since the datacentre is one of the most energy efficient in the industry, savings made by using less power are passed onto customers.
•	In conjunction with our network division GlobalAXS Communications, we can provide a full range of high capacity connectivity solutions.
•	Customers can make use of a dedicated build room when necessary.
•	Secure onsite parking is available free to all customers.
•	We provide a break room and a meeting room with projection facilities when necessary.
•	If required we can provide a fully connected onsite office and all in a location convenient for the motorways and Manchester / Liverpool airports.
•	Our technical and operations directors are fully hands-on and very approachable so will be available onsite should you ever need to discuss any issues.
•	Our data floor is fully serviced with a monitor trolley so you can easily access your server directly should there be a need.
•	As long as you let us know in advance, we accept deliveries of your hardware and can even store it for a short period until you’re ready to deal with it.

Our expansion plans include a growth in our technical support team who are able to offer remote hands and build services. In the very near future we are also expanding into spacious addition premises that will have similar power distribution and cooling systems to those enjoyed in our current building and of course, our connectivity capacity is probably unrivalled in the whole of the UK for a company of our type.

All persuasive arguments to give IceColo a call to discuss your requirements.

New Fibre Ductwork Installation

Installation of two new large fibre ducts has been completed at the IceColo Manchester datacentre.

To cope with increasing demand for connectivity diversity and capacity in the datacentre, additional fibre duct capacity has been installed at the datacentre. To avoid the need to repeatedly dig up the road for every new cable, ductwork is buried underground - in which fibre cables are pulled into the datacentre when needed.

Kingston Communications (KCOM) will be the first telecoms company to install their cable in this new ductwork, with a 1000Mbps private Ethernet circuit to a customer\'s site in Milton Keynes.

Network operators present in the IceColo datacentre include GlobalAXS, KCOM, BT, Virgin Media and AT&T

BT OpenReach Connects to IceColo

We are pleased to announce that the OpenReach now have live fibre in the IceColo datacentre, with plenty of extra capacity for future circuits.

The presence of BT OpenReach fibre directly on-site further enhances the attractiveness of the IceColo site by reducing the costs incurred by our customers when connecting to external networks.

OpenReach joins a number of existing fibre operators on-site, including GlobalAXS, Virgin Media (formerly NTL:Telewest) and Kingston Communications (KCOM)

The extensive choice of network operators on-site gives customers access to a wide range of highly cost-effective local, national and international Ethernet point-to-point and MPLS backhaul services.

IceColo Goes Greener

With energy efficiency always on the agenda, we have taken a massive step forward in reducing our power consumption for one of the most critical elements of data centre function: rackspace cooling.

We have been able to reduce our overall power consumption for cooling by 90%. Despite the consumption reduction, the air supply temperature is maintained at the same level as traditional air conditioning units.

The huge consumption reduction is further aided by our state of the art cold isle containment system. This enables us to cool a relatively small proportion of floor space, while maintaining the perfect server hosting environment.
